← Latest editionAthens blast kills woman as rescuers search for five missing
One woman has died and five people remain missing after an explosion brought down a building in Plaka. Investigators have not established the cause.

- A woman was found dead in the rubble of a two-storey building in Athens’ Plaka district on Saturday. Five people are still missing, Greek fire service officials said.1
- The explosion struck at about 7.35am on Friday, 25 September, near the Acropolis. Three people were injured, and nearby homes, shops and cars were damaged.2
- Those missing are believed to include residents and people staying in tourist accommodation, but their identities and nationalities have not been confirmed. Early reports about who was in the building differ.13
- A natural-gas leak is one line of inquiry, not an established cause. Athens authorities are investigating.23
- At least three nearby homes have been declared uninhabitable, Greece’s public broadcaster ERT reported.4
The deaths and missing people turn the blast from a rescue emergency into a wider safety question for a tightly packed neighbourhood of homes and short-term rentals. Officials are still assessing nearby buildings, while rescuers search the wreckage.
