Amazon Web Services says it cannot restore data in one UAE availability zone or anywhere in its Bahrain region after Iranian strikes exposed the limits of cloud redundancy.

Amazon Web Services says it cannot restore access to customer data held exclusively in one United Arab Emirates availability zone and across its entire Bahrain region after war damage to its facilities. 1
- AWS said data and resources in the UAE’s
mec1-az2availability zone could not be recovered. - In Bahrain, damage crossed all three availability zones, exceeding what AWS’s regional and multi-zone systems were built to withstand. 2
- Amazon has not disclosed how many customers are affected, how much data is gone, or which organisations have lost it.
- AWS’s customer agreement disclaims liability for the value of customer content and excludes failures caused by war, although the legal consequences will depend on individual contracts and applicable law. 3
The disclosure turns a familiar cloud promise on its head. Availability zones are designed to isolate failures: customers can spread workloads across separate facilities so that a fire, power failure or other local disaster does not take everything offline. But AWS says the strikes damaged infrastructure across multiple zones. The architecture worked against an ordinary site failure; it did not withstand a regional attack.
AWS’s own guidance says resources are not automatically copied between regions. Customers must configure cross-region replication or backups themselves. 4 That leaves the organisations that kept data only in Bahrain, or only in the affected UAE zone, facing the consequences of a design choice many customers may have understood as Amazon’s resilience problem rather than their own.
Amazon says it is replacing damaged infrastructure and will provide another Bahrain update in early 2027. A company spokesperson also disputed the suggestion that the affected sites would never reopen, while declining to say when or how they would return. 2 For now, the important fact is simpler: six months after the first strikes, AWS has told customers that some of their data cannot be brought back.
