Cyclone Arnab’s landfall process was still under way near the Kakinada–Yanam coast at 6am on Wednesday, after the storm’s outer bands reached land. The Andhra Pradesh disaster-management authority said the centre was about 30km from Narsapur. Its update did not establish when the crossing would finish.1
Winds of 125–135 km/h were reported in Kakinada, Konaseema and West Godavari districts. The storm had accelerated before reaching the coast, bringing the expected crossing forward by several hours, The Indian Express reported.12
Rainfall exceeded 200mm at several locations in Andhra Pradesh. Kannuripalem, in Anakapalli district, recorded 261.5mm between 8.30am on Tuesday and 4am on Wednesday. Reports also described flooding, fallen trees and electricity poles, damaged roads and power outages.31
By Tuesday evening, government figures put the number of people moved to safety at about 90,000 in Andhra Pradesh and 48,000 in Odisha. Officials expected evacuations to continue overnight and into Wednesday, so the figures were not final totals.42
