← Latest editionDiesel nears record as Scottish forecourts pass £2 a litre
RAC’s latest published average was 198.32p a litre on Friday. It has not confirmed a record, while BBC analysis found at least 226 Scottish sites charging more than £2.

- The RAC put average diesel at 198.32p a litre on 25 September—0.77p below the record of 199.09p, set on 25 June 2022. A full 55-litre tank would cost about £109.1
- The RAC forecast a new record over the weekend, but that was a prediction, not confirmation. On Saturday 26 September, its latest published figure remained Friday’s average.1
- BBC Scotland analysis found at least 226 Scottish forecourts charging more than £2 a litre. It reported some island prices around 50p a litre above those at central-belt supermarkets.2
- A separate reading of the government’s Fuel Finder data on 24 September counted 1,212 of 7,750 reporting forecourts at £2 or more. That is an earlier snapshot, not a current UK-wide count.3
The record claim needs care: a few pumps have already crossed £2, but the RAC’s national average had not reached its 2022 peak in its latest published update. The latest RAC figure also differs from the government-data reading, which was taken a day earlier and uses a separate dataset and method.
The steepest pressure is not shared evenly. BBC’s Scottish findings point to rural and island drivers, while hauliers told the broadcaster that higher fuel bills were hitting their businesses hard. The headline £109 fill-up is an average-sized tank calculation; what drivers actually pay depends on the price at their local forecourt.12
