← Latest editionG7 plans 100 million-barrel oil and fuel release
The four-month plan puts diesel first as the G7 responds to tight fuel supplies. Its public statement does not say how much each country will provide—or whether the 100 million barrels are additional to an earlier pledge.

- The G7 says a coordinated release of 100 million barrels will begin immediately and run over four months.
- A substantial quantity of diesel is due in the first 20 days.
- The International Energy Agency says about 325 million barrels of an earlier 400-million-barrel pledge have already been released.
- The G7 has asked the agency to report on implementation and market effects within 20 days.
The G7’s announcement sets out a plan, not a confirmation that the barrels have already reached the market. Leaders said the release would be coordinated through the International Energy Agency (IEA), with diesel front-loaded and further releases possible if needed. They also agreed to coordinate refinery maintenance and temporarily increase refinery use where feasible. 1
How the new plan fits with the earlier one is unclear. The G7 statement says it will implement the March 2026 commitments, taking account of commitments already fulfilled. But the IEA reported on 2 October that about 325 million of the 400 million barrels pledged in March had been released. The public statements do not explain whether the new 100 million barrels are additional or include the remaining part of that pledge. 1 2
That distinction matters because the announcement gives no country-by-country contributions or exact split between crude oil and refined fuels, including diesel. Crude must be processed in a refinery before it can add to diesel supply; released diesel can enter the fuel market directly. The G7 has also promised not to restrict energy exports between its members. 1
The release comes amid a severe squeeze on refined fuels. In its September oil-market report, the IEA said global observed oil inventories had fallen by 507 million barrels since February. Gulf and Russian diesel and gasoil exports together were 1.6 million barrels a day lower in August than in February. 3
The immediate price response does not show what the release will ultimately do for consumers. The Associated Press reported that US oil prices fell 2% after the announcement, while citing an analyst who said uncertainty over the link to the March pledge limited the market reaction. The G7 has asked the IEA to monitor the rollout and its effect on energy security and market stability, and to deliver recommendations within 20 days. 4 1
