Pentagon plans to livestream Nidal Hasan’s scheduled firing-squad execution

The execution is set for 3 December at Fort Hood, where Hasan killed 13 people in 2009. If carried out, it would be the first US military execution since 1961.

The Army set the date after President Donald Trump approved Hasan’s death sentence on 2 October. Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle directed the execution on 6 October, and the Army announced the schedule the following day. Its announcement sets out the timing rules for military executions, but does not explain the authority or procedures for broadcasting one.3

Hegseth has said people should be able to watch so they understand the consequences of the 2009 attack. Hasan, then an Army psychiatrist, opened fire at Fort Hood’s Soldier Readiness Processing Center on 5 November 2009. A military jury found him guilty in August 2013 and sentenced him to death five days later.23

The broadcast would take a military execution beyond the small, controlled groups of witnesses typically present. Reuters described it as an unprecedented broadcast of a US execution. The Pentagon has said details will follow; the Army has not yet explained where the stream would appear or how public access would work.12

The plan has prompted questions about public spectacle and the dignity of the prisoner, as well as arguments that showing an execution could make capital punishment more transparent. Those are competing views from legal experts, not a settled legal ruling. The Associated Press reported that Hasan could seek a review in civilian court that might delay the execution.4
