The target was not simply a place of worship. It was a police compound where officers and their families prayed alongside civilians. The blast struck the compound’s boundary, followed by an armed assault aimed at buildings used by counter-terrorism and intelligence personnel. 12

That combination matters. Militants were able to bring a vehicle bomb to a protected police site and follow it with a ground assault. The attack came as Pakistan intensifies operations against armed groups in the north-west and as violence rises along the Afghan border. 1

The conflicting accounts over responsibility also underline how little is known in the first hours after the attack. A reported claim by Ittehadul Mujahideen does not establish who planned or carried out the assault. The Pakistani Taliban, or TTP, remains a leading suspicion in the wider conflict, but AP reported no immediate confirmation of its involvement. 34
