Bomb threats prompt searches of seven flights across Europe

The alerts affected flights from Heathrow and Manchester, as airports in four countries carried out searches and security checks.

Bomb threats prompted security checks on seven passenger flights in Poland, Spain, Italy and Bulgaria on Tuesday. All landed safely, searches found no explosives and no injuries were reported. ¹ ²

The flights included services from Heathrow and Copenhagen to Warsaw; Bergamo and Dublin to Sofia; Lisbon and Dublin to Rome; and Manchester to Murcia. Bulgarian officials identified the Sofia-bound flights as coming from Bergamo and Dublin, correcting early reports that one had come from Israel. ³ ⁴ ²

The LOT flight from Heathrow diverted to Warsaw-Modlin, which temporarily closed while the aircraft was checked and resumed operations at 11.50am local time. A SAS flight from Copenhagen landed at Warsaw-Chopin, where a runway was briefly closed. ⁵

In Spain, the Civil Guard searched the Ryanair flight from Manchester after it landed in Murcia and found no explosives. Murcia airport temporarily closed, diverting one inbound flight to Alicante. At Rome Fiumicino, police searched the two Ryanair aircraft; two Italian Air Force Eurofighters escorted the Dublin flight. ⁶ ⁷

Reports documented delays and an inbound diversion, but did not provide a comprehensive count of cancelled departures. By late Tuesday, investigators had not publicly identified who sent the threats or established whether the incidents were connected. ⁷ ³ ²
