← Latest editionSpaceX agrees to buy Grain’s nationwide 800 MHz spectrum
SpaceX says the low-band licences would add a coverage layer to Starlink Mobile’s planned satellite-and-ground network. The sale still needs Federal Communications Commission approval.

- The agreement covers Grain Management’s nationwide portfolio of up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band.
- SpaceX says the spectrum would complement Starlink Mobile’s 2 GHz capacity and help its signal reach indoors.
- The sale is subject to FCC approval and other closing conditions; neither a price nor a timetable has been announced.
- SpaceX plans a network combining satellites and ground infrastructure, not satellites alone.
SpaceX has agreed to buy Grain Management’s nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio, a step towards its plan to turn Starlink Mobile into a US mobile network operator. The deal was announced on 8 October. It has not closed: Grain says it still needs Federal Communications Commission approval and must meet other customary closing conditions.1
The portfolio contains up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum. SpaceX says this lower-band spectrum would complement Starlink Mobile’s global 2 GHz mid-band capacity: the company expects it to provide a coverage layer and help signals pass through obstacles such as walls. That is SpaceX’s description of the intended benefit, not a result demonstrated by the proposed service.23
SpaceX’s plan also depends on ground infrastructure. The company says its future network would combine satellites with a terrestrial deployment. Owning spectrum licences would not, on its own, establish that this ground network has been built or that customers’ service has changed.2
The price and a schedule for closing or deploying the 800 MHz spectrum have not been disclosed. The $2.9 billion sometimes associated with these licences was the price in a separate earlier transaction: T-Mobile said its transfer of the 800 MHz portfolio to Grain closed in August in exchange for cash and Grain’s 600 MHz licences. That was not the price of the proposed SpaceX purchase.4
A separate FCC action may add to the confusion. On 6 October, the commission approved SpaceX’s application for a 15,000-satellite direct-to-device constellation. That approval is distinct from the FCC consent still required for the Grain spectrum transfer.21
