A Renfe high-speed train struck a stationary Iryo service near Urda, in Spain’s Toledo province, at 08:53 on Wednesday. Castilla-La Mancha president Emiliano García-Page reported 68 deaths. By the latest reported toll, 53 people were in hospital, including 15 who were seriously injured; recovery work was continuing, so the final casualty count was not established. 1

The trains were travelling on the Madrid–Seville route. Three Iryo carriages derailed down an embankment, while the Renfe locomotive fell down the opposite slope and its first carriage broke apart, according to RTVE’s account of Guardia Civil aerial images. Renfe said the collision interrupted services between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalucía. 2 3

In a preliminary account reported by Europa Press, the Transport Ministry said the LZB signalling system failed at 08:32, automatically stopping six trains. Eight minutes later, the control centre authorised normal running, although the procedure described by the ministry required trains to proceed at sight and at about 40km/h. The ministry said the Renfe train was travelling at 200km/h when it hit the Iryo service. Train and control-system records had not yet publicly confirmed this sequence, which remains under investigation. 4

Transport Minister Óscar Puente called the restart decision incomprehensible. RTVE reported that the Guardia Civil questioned the Adif circulation official associated with the decision; that report did not establish a charge or finding of guilt. 5

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced three days of official mourning, from 29 to 31 October, and said investigators and the courts would establish what happened. 6
