At least 24 people were killed in Russian strikes on a school used as an aid distribution centre and shelter in Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, Ukrainian emergency services said. Rescue work was continuing, with 27 people reported missing.123
The strike took place between 10am and 11am, when bread was due to be handed out to people from Komyshuvakha and nearby villages, local broadcaster Suspilne reported. The school was used as a humanitarian hub and shelter for residents.1
Reports of injuries varied as the rescue operation unfolded. Suspilne’s summary said 10 people were hurt, while a later emergency-services update carried by the broadcaster put the number at five, including two rescuers. The same update said two rescuers and four police officers were among the dead. The Associated Press earlier reported that about 20 people were missing.12
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said 10 guided bombs struck the area. The number and type of weapons have not been independently verified, and the reviewed reports did not include a Russian response or independent forensic confirmation of responsibility.23
